Our Microgreens Journey
Howdy! My name is Ana and I am the owner-farmer at Suburb Farmer.
My passion for growing herbs & microgreens started when I really needed to eat healthy, nutritious food to compensate for the stress over-build from my IT job. It wasn't long from there, before I realised that stress can cause lot of deficiencies of much needed vitamins and minerals for proper functioning of our body. Not to mention unhealthy eating habits or unorderly sleep schedule that contributed further to my ailments that needed immediate course correction.
While browsing through social media, I bumped into an article titled “Deficiency? Microgreens are your natural supplements”.
Being born into a family of farmers, I was natually intrigued to know more about Microgreens, how they're grown and why should one consume them. My thorough research helped me realise that these tiny greens are mighty enough to solve my health problems. That was the exact moment when I decided to pursue this further & decided to quit my IT job to help myself & others around me.
A microgreen has a single central stem which has been cut just above the soil line during harvesting and contain up to 40% more phytochemicals (beneficial nutrients and components) than their full-grown counterparts. Though these little greens are small in stature, they contain extremely high levels of powerful vitamins, minerals, and health-supporting components.
My experience of growing microgreens started with an intent of household consumption along with conventional vegetables, herbs and fruits. Fast forward few years, here I am today with better health and going back to my roots - to grow nutritious microgreens & bring Farm Fresh produce to your door step. I take pride in sharing my journey, the lessons I've learnt & the benefits that I have reaped in the due course.
Today, I run a commercial modern urban farm located in the cosy regional town of Linton, Victoria. Our farm has state of the art technology to grow clean, produce - This means no pollution or pesticides ever touch our plants. We grow our microgreens in a controlled environment that allows us to give you freshest, tastiest and most nutritious microgreens possible.
I strongly believe in ecologocially conscious living & doing good to the planet that we call home. As such, the materials used for growing is free from synthetic fertilizers and post-harvest waste is compost friendly which is later used to grow vegetables and leafy greens in conventional soil garden beds for our household consumption. The packaging used is eco-friendly too! Our packaging clam shells are made from PLA, a renewable plant-based bioplastic that is compostable. The trays we re-use for growing are cleaned using plant-based cleaning materials as well.
Our Microgreens are local, healthy and fresh that can be delivered to tables and restaurants within hours of harvest. Take a look at our varieties on our website and do give them a try. We do accept bulk orders. So, if you are a restaurant or a grocery store, please email us on hello@suburbfarmer.com.au
