FAQ

What are Microgreens?

Microgreens are essentially ‘baby versions’ of your favorite leafy greens! Microgreens are usually harvested 7-21 days after germination, when the plant’s first leaves (cotyledon leaves) emerge.

Why Microgreens?

  • HIGH IN NUTRIENTS: Contain 4-40 times more nutrients by weight than their fully-grown counterpart.
  • IMPROVE HEART HEALTH: Animal studies have shown microgreens may help reduce heart disease risk factors, such as weight, bad LDI, cholesterol & triglycerides
  • CONTAIN POLYPHENOLS: Prevent the buildup of harmful free radicals associated with a reduced risk of heart disease, cancer and Alzheimer’s disease. Contain wider variety of polyphenols than their mature vegetable counterparts.
  • REDUCE CHRONIC DISEASE RISK : Veggie consumption is associated with the lower risk of certain cancers, inflammation, heart disease, diabetes & obesity.

How do microgreens compare to Adult Greens?

Just like a seed contains a very high density of energy and minerals, microgreens contain a high concentration nutrients and flavor!

A Study at the University of Maryland in College Park showed that microgreens were four to 40-fold more concentrated with nutrients than their mature counterparts.

For example, red cabbage microgreens had 40 times more vitamin E and six times more vitamin C than mature red cabbage. Cilantro microgreens had three times more beta-carotene than mature cilantro.(Qin Wang, PhD, assistant professor, University of Maryland, College Park.ncentration )

How do you use Microgreens?

There are many ways to eat microgreens, a few ideas include, but not limited to:

  • Pile them on your Sandwiches, Burritos, Tacos, Curry.
  • Add them to your smoothies and shakes
  • Juice them in a masticating juicer
  • Mixed them in with your grain bowls and other creations
  • As a side salad on literally any dish using the plates other flavors to dress them
  • As a fantastic garnish to add that special something to your plates
  • Dress them and eat them solo as a power salad (*Oliver’s favorite way to eat them)
  • Add them to your pasta, top them on your roast veggies, Soups, Omelet and many more.
  • Just snack on them raw!

No matter how you consume them, microgreens are a great way to add some nutritional value to any meal!

How do you wash Microgreens?

It’s a good idea for health reasons to wash your microgreens before eating them, just like any vegetable. But microgreens can bruise easily, so they need to be handled with care.

You don’t need to drown them. Just lightly rinse them in cold water and then gently run them through a salad spinner to dry them off if you’ve got one.

It’s best to wash your microgreens right before you’re going to use them, not before you store them in the refrigerator. Otherwise they may have excess moisture and deteriorate more quickly.

How do you store Microgreens?

Microgreens like to be kept cool. Around 36 degrees F (around 2 degrees C.) Normal refrigerators can run at up to 40 F (4.5 C) so you may want to check your settings and turn your fridge down a bit if you’re able to.Maintaining moisture is a key part of keeping your microgreens fresh and crunchy.

One of the best and simplest ways to store them is to put them between damp pieces of paper towels and then seal them in a plastic bag or container.

If you store your microgreens this way, you should expect them to stay good in your refrigerator for up to a week.

It’s best to leave your microgreens in the refrigerator until right up until they need to go on to your plate or into your recipe. That way they won’t start to dry out or wilt before you get to serve them.

Can you leave the delivered box on the countertop for consumption?

Microgreens love light when they’re still growing. But once you harvest them, it’s best to keep them out of direct sunlight.

Exposing some varieties of microgreens to sunlight after they’ve been harvested can alter their taste and appearance.

What is the difference between microgreens, sprouts & baby salad greens?

These are all different stages of a plant’s growth:

Sprouts: Sprouts are the first stage of a seed’s development and generally grow without a growing medium (soil), but are sprouted and rinsed in a sprouting tray, jar, or bag. They are usually eaten soon after the seeds germinate.

Microgreens: Microgreens typically grow in soil or other growing medium and are the second stage of a plant’s life, where roots establish themselves and the first leaves (called cotyledons) appear. They’re harvested at this stage or just as the true leaves (adult stage leaves) emerge. Plants in the microgreen stage are typically at their peak of flavor intensity and nutritional content.

Baby Salad Green: Baby greens are allowed to grow for a week or two beyond the microgreen stage when the true leaves have emerged. They’re harvested while they are still juvenile plants. The flavors are much closer to their full adult stage. These greens have had time to pull nutrients out of the soil they are growing in.

How do you choose the Microgreens for your needs?

As a general rule, microgreens taste like a more intense version of their full-sized vegetable forms. So when in doubt, just pick a microgreen variety of a vegetable or herb that you already enjoy eating.

If you’re looking for something spicy, radish and mustard microgreens can add some zing to your dishes. Other microgreens have flavours that are neutral, sweet, or even sour!

Don’t be scared of using microgreens to add some more colour to your recipes as well. Microgreens come in a variety of colors including vibrant shades of red, yellow, purple, and of course green!

Are Microgreens washed pre delivery?

No, we do not wash the produce post-harvest. Please wash the produce just before consumption to enable shelf life.

Are there any safety precautions that you should be aware of related to microgreens?

Most people can safely consume microgreens without any risk. However there are a few things to keep in mind.

  • Microgreens often grow in a moist environment. While significantly less risky than sprouts, it is possible for microgreens to harbor E. Coli and other bacteria if not properly handled. So it’s important to thoroughly wash all microgreens before consuming them.
  • Microgreens can come from a wide range of different herbs and vegetables. If you have a food allergy to a specific vegetable, you may also be allergic to it in microgreen form. For example, if you’re allergic to soybeans, you may want to avoid soybean microgreens too.
  • However, some plants that would normally contain gluten such as alfalfa, wheatgrass, barley, and buckwheat are usually fine to eat for the gluten-intolerant since they haven’t had a chance to start producing gluten yet in their microgreen form.
  • Regardless, if you develop an allergic reaction after eating a microgreen, you should stop consuming it immediately and talk to your doctor. If you’re taking blood thinning medication like Warfarin, eating large amounts of microgreens may interfere with your medication. This is because many kinds of microgreens are high in Vitamin K, which is a vitamin that’s essential for blood clotting. Talk to your primary care provider if you have any questions about this or other medication interactions.

Are packaging material compost friendly?

Our compostable catering disposables can biodegrade in under 12 weeks in commercial composting, which provides the perfect balance of microbes, moisture and warmth.

Are the pots from live microgreens range Biodegrable as mentioned on the pot?

Yes they are biodegradable. These pots are sourced from a Local company that has vested interest in plastic waste reform.

Biogone was the first business to introduce landfill-biodegradable plastic to the Australian market; a product that is now used across 25 countries. The innovative technology is made by combining traditional plastic with an organic additive, and has the benefits of it being recyclable, but once disposed to landfill, biodegradation is accelerated approximately 90+% faster than conventional plastics; biodegrading into an organic matter, producing a natural fertiliser and no microplastics.

Refer link below from Biogone

How to dispose the pots from Live microgreens purchase?

Soil and the root material can go to your compost bin or green bin.

Now with the Pots, there are 3 ways to dispose them after consuming the microgreens.

1. Can be returned back to us for discount on your next purchase 🙂 We highly recommend this approach to be more sustainable and use the product till we cannot use them anymore before it can be industrially composted! Every pot returned will reduce 20cents off your next buy!

2. If you are unable to return the empty pots back to us, these can go as recyclable material.

3. Last option will be Landfill : These are biodegradable and will not leave trace of microplastics which is harmful to environment and there will be no toxic residue when the biodegradable plastic decomposes.
We understand that these pots have undergone ASTM and BMP tests, which are recognised internationally as being the benchmark of verifications.

The ASTM D5511 is a test performed by an independent laboratory that measures the carbon released from the plastic as a biogas to verify claims of biodegradability in anaerobic conditions, intending to replicate conditions found in a typical landfill.

we are currently working on more sustainably and eco-friendly practice to reach this product to more number of consumers. Watch this space for more updates !
